COLD WAR

HOSKINS, MARION DAVID, 25, born in Anna, graduated from Plano High School. US Army. Killed, along with 17 others, in the crash of a US Air Force C-124A Globemaster II, near Tacoma, Washington, on 24 May, 1961. The giant transport plane, nicknamed "Old Shaky", because of its poor safety record, crashed and burned on takeoff from McChord Air Force Base. The soldiers on board were returning to Ft.Sill, Oklahoma, after participating in Exercise Lava Plains at the Yakima Firing Center. He is buried at Highland Cemetery, Anna, Texas.

MITCHELL, KELLY, 24, Plano, US Navy, Aviation Machinist's Mate . Lifelong Plano resident, attended TCU, killed in car wreck near Olathe Naval Air Station, Kansas, 19 April, 1967, while on active duty. Served for almost eight years in the Naval Reserves and regular Navy. Buried at Plano Mutual Cemetery.

LESTER, GARY JOE 25, Plano,  S/Sgt. US MARINE CORPS, Helicopter Crew Chief serving onboard the carrier, USS Guadalcanal. Killed, along with four others, when his helicopter, from the USS Guadalcanal, went down in the North Sea off the coast of Denmark, 14 September, 1982, while participating in NATO exercises. All hands were lost at sea.  His body, and those of the three other Marines and one Sailor onboard, were not recovered. A memorial marker stands at Arlington National Cemetery in S/Sgt. Lester's honor.

POLLOCK, JOSHUA D.  21, Frisco High School Class of 2006, Sgt. US Army National Guard. Cavalry Scout and combat veterans of the War in Iraq. Killed 21 March, 2009 in a traffic accident while stationed at Camp Swift in Austin, Texas, awaiting deployment to Afghanistan. Buried at Ridgeview West Memorial Park, Frisco, Texas.

 


SAMOLIA

JOYCE, JAMES CASEY  24, Plano,  Sgt. US ARMY, B Company, 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, out of Fort Benning, Georgia. Killed in action as he attempted to save the life of one of his fellow soldiers, 3 Oct. 1993. The story of the mission is told in the book and movie "Black Hawk Down." Buried at Arlington National Cemetery


IRAQ

BOATRIGHT, MICHAEL LUKE  25, Frisco, Sgt. US ARMY, 20th Engineer Bn. 1st Cavalry Div.  KIA 4 Dec, 2004, by a roadside bomb, while involved in combat operations in Baghdad, Iraq. Buried at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio.

BURKS, PETER HASKELL 26, Celina, 2nd Lt. US ARMY, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment. KIA 14 November, 2007.

CRAVER, JOHNNY K.    37, McKinney,  2nd Lt.  US ARMY  1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry Division  KIA 13 October, 2006.

DUCKWORTH, ERIC T.  26, Plano S/Sgt  US ARMY  759th Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Brigade ,  KIA 10 Oct. 2007.

HANLEY, TIMOTHY J.  24, McKinney, SPC US ARMY Bravo Company, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) Born 13 June, 1983, died 25 September, 2007.

HAYES, JACOB D.  24, Allen & Plano, Lance/Corporal US MARINE CORPS, Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division. Born 28 July, 1984, died 17 December 2008 as a result of injuries received in Iraq. Buried at Ridgeview Memorial Park.

SMITH, BRIAN DREW  30, McKinney, 2nd Lt., US ARMY, Company A, 1st Battalion, 34th Armor, 1st Infantry Division.  KIA 2 July, 2004.

TROVILLION, TYLER SETH 23, Plano, Cpl. US MARINE CORPS, 1st. Bn. 5th Marine Regt. 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, 1st Marine Division.  KIA 15 June, 2005. Buried at Ridgeview Memorial Park.


AFGHANISTAN

COURCY, PETER JOHN  22, Frisco, Cpl. US ARMY, D Company, 506th Infantry, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, died on 10 February,
2009 from wounds suffered when his vehicle struck by a car bomb in Salerno, Afghanistan.

BOARD, CODY A.  19, McKinney,  PFC, 2009 graduate of McKinney North High School, killed in action near Mirwais, Afghanistan, on 4 October, 2010.  Killed by an enemy improvised explosive device while serving with 1st Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment.

WELCH, ROBERT F. III  26, 1st Lt. US Army, 2003 graduate of Wylie High School, 2008 graduate of the University of Texas at Arlington. Ordinance Officer, Company B, 201st Brigade, Support Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Task Force Duke. Died on 3 April, 2011, of wounds sustained during a mortar barrage on his position in Khost Province, Afghanistan, near the Pakistani Border,  when his unit came under attack from enemy combatants while patrolling the perimeter of his forward operating base. Buried at the DFW National Cemetery. 


KUWAIT

 MATTHEW R. COURTOIS, 22, of Lucas, Eagle Scout, Senior Airman US AIR FORCE, 366th Security Forces Squadron, Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho, erved one tour of duty in Iraq, died 20 September, 2009 as a result of a non-hostile incident on Abdullah Al Mubarak Airbase, Kuwait. Buried at Idaho State Veterans Cemetery, Boise, Idaho.

2016

TIMOTHY BARBER, 18, McKinney, 4th Class Cadet at the United States Air Force Academy. Killed in a plane crash December 31, 2016, in McKinney. While home on leave, in a small private plane piloted by his father, a retired Air Force Lt. Colonel, it was struck by another aircraft and crashed in the middle of Custer Road. He and his father are buried at the Air Force Academy in Colorado.
