Lance/Corporal STEVEN W. HUTCHINGS
US MARINE CORPS
Steven Wylie Hutchings was born August 14, 1948, and graduated from Celina High School in 1966. He joined the Marine Corps, was trained as a rifleman, and arrived in Vietnam March 25, 1968. Ten days later, L/Cpl Hutchings was assigned to Golf Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines, where he served with Bravo Squad, 3rd Platoon.. The tactical area of operation of his unit was in the far northern section of South Vietnam, in Quang Tri Province near the DMZ. Enemy contact was a daily occurrence for the Marines in that part of the country, and Steve's unit was no exception. On the night of August 5, 1968, Steve was walking in the point position of a squad-size patrol. At just after midnight (Aug. 6) they walked up on a small group of Viet Cong in the dark. The first shot fired by the VC hit Steve, killing him instantly. Steven W. Hutchings was 19 years old. His name can be found on the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial in Washington DC, at Panel 49W, Row 19. He is buried at Restland Memorial Park in Dallas, Texas.
