VETERANS MEMORIAL

"It is better to have lived one day as a
lion, than to live ten thousand years as a sheep."
From an ancient Tibetan proverb
WORLD WAR I MEMORIAL
The "Great War" in Europe was so bloody and savage, that
it was touted as " The War to End All Wars." Needless to say, they were wrong.
On April 6, 1917, the United States declared war on Germany, and fought until
the war officially ended on June 30, 1919. Fifty-four Collin County boys have
been identified as killed or died from disease (disease killed more people than
actual combat). The list includes the first man from Collin County to ever be
killed in overseas combat.

WORLD WAR II MEMORIAL
On December 7, 1941, the United States was drawn into an
already raging global war, when Japan attacked the US Navy base at Pearl Harbor,
Hawaii. The fighting lasted until September 2, 1945. During that time hundreds of Collin County men and women answered the call
to duty when the county was still just a small rural farming region. This list
includes 206 brave men who died in all corners of the globe. Collin County is
proud to be the home of the most decorated soldier of the war, Audie Murphy.

KOREA MEMORIAL
In June of 1950, a free South Korea was invaded
by Communist North Korea, and America answered the call to help an ally defend
itself. The fighting was bloody and vicious, but the invaders were soundly
defeated. At that time Communist China sent hundreds of thousands of troops,
supported by Russian planes and pilots, to join in the fight, at which time the
fighting became even more vicious. On July 27, 1953, at 10:00 PM, the cease-fire
went into effect and the war ended. Fourteen Collin County boys have been
identified as having been killed in action.

VIETNAM MEMORIAL
In a war in which Communist North Vietnam
invaded a free South Vietnam, American troops were involved from 1957 until
1973, although US ground combat units didn't arrive until 1965. Although having
never lost a major battle, the anti-war press in the US helped convince the
public that we were losing. The media still claims that Vietnam was the only war
the US ever lost, even though a truce was signed in 1973 to end the fighting.
Our troops were brought home, and two years later North Vietnam again invaded
the South, but this time was successful in their effort. Which raises the
question: "How could we lose if we weren't even there?"
Twenty-one brave young men from Collin County were killed in Vietnam, including one
CONGRESSIONAL MEDAL OF HONOR recipient.
